I. The Impact Culture has on Change

Organizational culture is becoming a very important topic. In addition, organizational culture has become of the focus of growing research and organizational development applications. Many of the best-selling management books identify organizational culture as a primary concern for leaders. Organizational culture can be seen as a major strength or weakness not only in the change process but in the overall effectiveness of an organization.

A well-managed organization culture that is closely linked to business strategies can mean the difference between the success and failure of an organization. The same is true of a culture that is properly managed through the redesign or change process. There are different elements of corporate culture that need to be managed to increase organizational effectiveness. The physical aspects of employee behavior such as language and dress along with the organization’s physical space can impact a change process. The norms or guiding principles of how employees should behave in particular situations is another important element that needs to be managed. Values tell employees what is important to the organization and what deserves their attention. Finally, the taken-for-granted assumptions about how problems will be solved are the final element of organizational culture that needs to be managed to increase the likelihood of successful organizational redesign. Managing these elements is not easy on a day-to-day basis and even more difficult during a change process. It is also important to remember that a certain set of values and assumptions that once was a strength, can also become a weakness when an organization is trying to implement a new strategy.

Assignment 4:

How might leaders understand the culture of their organization? In 300 words, discuss the question and provide credible, outside sources to substantiate your position.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: First, create your personal definition of organizational culture based upon the week’s required readings and lectures and your previous experience. Then, think about an organization that you know well and describe its organizational culture at a point in time; describe the point in time and make sure that you are fully discussing the culture according to your personal definition.
