Designing IS (Business proposal)(LO-1: 1.1) (Submission Deadline: Week 8)

Scenario

As an up-and-coming expert in information systems, you want to use your expertise to develop a new knowledge-based commercial enterprise, which will be a fully digital firm, of course!

Your business will be strictly knowledge-based – it will create knowledge and sell it. This could include direct knowledge, such as what a lawyer or engineer or programmer does, or indirect knowledge, which is (loosely) defined as adding value to existing knowledge (such as someone who organizes or distributes or rearranges knowledge).

You need to describe two basic components of the business:

1. What its core activity will be

2. What the information architecture of the business will be

Some examples of a core business activity are: writing custom software, website development, organizing (acquiring & distributing) information such as rental housing information, consumer product warranty information (e.g. acting as a central repository for warranty information), consumer product-recall information (another “central repository” idea), book-keeping services, academic tutoring services, editing/proofreading services and so on. You’ve probably had an idea about a business – here’s your chance to analyze it. The information architecture consists of identifying the core strategic systems that your business will need, plus the role of the other classic digital-enterprise systems: CRMs (Customer relationship management), SCMs (Supply chain management), and KMSs (Knowledge management system).

Your mission:Write a two- to three-page proposal for a business. This needs to define the business and the basic information architecture.

You should identify the customers and suppliers, and show how the classical enterprise systems could be used to implement your business. You should describe how customers interact with your business, how you acquire your “raw materials” (whatever it might be), and how you can deliver your product. If your business has an “after-sales support/service” component, think about how that would fit into your information architecture.

Use a combination of words and diagrams/pictures to describe your business and its information architecture. You might consider drawing a value chain for your proposed firm and identifying the strategic IS components your business will need.

Note:Think about the process of developing information architecture and how it applies to a business. A couple of pages that show the thought about the issues in the context of a “real” business are expected.

Use appropriate report/proposal format with an introduction at the beginning, main body with headings and sub-headings and conclusion at the end. A cover page, table of contents page, references list and bibliography would be at highest standard. The report might be written in 1000 – 1200 words.

Organization comprises of several departments and divisions, all these departments and divisions have different functional areas and their need arises from their daily functional workings. There are several areas which are done manually and need to be automated. Development of automated systems will be done based on inputs from several business users, organizations requirements, and stakeholder’s requirement.

Once the requirements are finalized the system development will be done with the help of designated development teams and testing teams will help to complete the system.

Organizations have following common functions areas and depending on the needs they have their own customized functional areas:

1. Administration management system

2. Inventory Management System

3. Customer Relationship management system

4. Employees Management System

5. Payroll Management System

6. Supply chain management system

All of the above areas are common to most of the organization and organization going to setup their environment need to think of it before finally setting up the process for their different departments.

There are different activities processed altogether under these systems. I will explain the systems why they will be used and what would be done to get them developed.

1. Administration Management System: When an organization is formed, from the basic needs to high needs there are systems which will be developed to measure and understand the organization requirements from the view point of employees, customers and owners. There is several considerations done to manage the office and place the orders based on the requirements to the vendors. When there is customized or COTS software packages are used in an organization it would help organization to maintain the data in the organization of its ins and outs.

2. Inventory Management system: This kind of system as a main requirement of an organization when they start actually working. This system basically tracks all the items ins and outs and figure out what would items reached the stock end and what items need to purchase. There are items which are no more required but certainly most of the items are required and bought back into the system.

3. Customer Relationship management system: This is known as CRM system, it will be used when an organization involves customers for his business and is an extensive support or selling items to the customers. It would help organization to maintain the customer records, their requirements tracks, what they actually need, when they need it and what would be their future expectations. Customer purchase and requirements are tracked in this system and then maintained for longer use when organization wants to evaluate their stock and what item they should sell, manufacture or create awareness of.
Employee Management System: This system helps organization to maintain their employee records, working with them. The system contains all the employee details who are already a member of organization or going to be the member of organization from the very first day. This will eventually results strong data records and helps companies to track employees even when they left the organization. There are areas
