The respiratory system is responsible for the intake of oxygen for the body and the removal of carbon dioxide. Decreased respiratory function significantly limits the ability of other systems to function properly because oxygen is essential at the cellular level for all activities to occur. Diseases of the respiratory system range from simple (the common cold) to very serious (cancer). There are several factors that can increase a patient’s risk of developing a respiratory disease.
